Arthur Aleith, Seattle, Smith Tower

Smith Tower (Seattle) – Hand tinted photo by Arthur Aleith, Circa 1920

This is one of my favorite photos in my collection. It was taken by an amateur photographer named Arthur J. Aleith. His name is embossed in the lower right corner of the image. I found this item in a pile of black and white photos in 2013 or 2014. It is stunning. If you look closely, it is showing Smith Tower in Seattle from 2nd Ave. Some of the bars and buildings in the photo still exist today. Also, a closer look shows some 1920’s cars parked in the avenue.

The back of the image tells a short story: “Daddy took this too before I came. When I did come Feb 5th 1921 this was the first building in Seattle he took me there and at the very top. Note by Vera Aleith. The above ink was written by mother (Martha).”.

The photo is an 8×10. The frame is not original. I absolutely love this photo. In fact, it is the only hand-tinted photo of the Smith Tower in Seattle that I have seen to date.
