Asahel Curtis – Skykomish River and Mount Index, 1910 (Photo 19191)

The item shown here is a unique hand-tinted photo from 1910 featuring the Skykomish River and Mount Index in the back, with a view of the west slope of Steven’s Pass. The hand-coloring in this image is very gentle and beautiful, and really expresses how magnificent the area really is . A closer look at the photo reveals that the bank of the river, as well as the mountains and the water splashes, are still in their original silver-gelatin black and white colors.

This photo is relatively unique – to date, I have not seen another photo, orotone, hand-tinted, gelatin-silver, or otherwise, that features this negative. It is an interesting piece and a nice addition to the collection. The frame seems to be the origial one, only reconditioned with newer backing. The item was acquired in 11/2016.
