Asahel Curtis, North Cascades National Park

Asahel Curtis – View of the Cascades (unknown year)

This item is very dear to my heart, because it is one of few items that was acquired from the estate of Asahel Lee Curtis (1937-2011), the great grandson of Asahel Curtis, the photographer. We do not know much about this item. In fact, it is the only Asahel Curtis item that I own that does not carry a signature or negative number. What we do know, however, is that the backing of the photo has the original stamp from Asahel Curtis’ shop in Seattle.

The photo shows the cascades from the North Cascades National Park. It is a hand-tinted photo, and if you look closely, you can tell that the cascades are black and white from the silver-gelatin paper, and all other artifacts in the photo have been hand-colored. The frame of this photo is spotless and seems to be the original frame, reconditioned. The backing is newer, and again, carries the stamp of Asahel Curtis’ shop. It is stunning. Definitely a personal favorite.
